How to Design in AR

AR is taking the web by storm and we know a few people have questions. According to Global Newswire, The growing adoption of 5G technology by various industries and enterprises will spur lucrative opportunities for the augmented reality industry in the forthcoming years, states Fortune Business Insights, in a report, titled “Augmented Reality Market, 2021-2028.” The market size stood at USD 4.16 billion in 2020

So many creators, specifically digital artists want to know how to enter the field of AR and we have some options below.

First, what is the difference between AR and VR?

  • Virtual Reality creates an immersive virtual environment, while Augmented Reality augments a real-world scene.
  • VR is 75% virtual, while AR is only 25% virtual.
  • VR requires a headset device, while AR does not.
  • VR users move in a completely fictional world, while AR users are in contact with the real world.

Start with adigital art piece.

Now you don’t HAVE to draw in apps such as Procreate or Photoshop BUT you’ll want to be able to layer your project. The hack to AR isn’t how complex your design is but rather how many subtle layers are moving to give the illusion of dimension.

Animate your piece inAfter Effects, Character Designeror Blender.

Many pieces I have are animated in After Effects. I’ve also worked with 3D programs such as Blender to create a 3D effect for my pieces. Something interesting about using these programs is the key to making an efficient workflow is having as many shortcuts as possible. I tend to use a lot of the pin tool to make limbs move in After Effects and keyboard shortcuts to navigate Blender efficiently.

I self-taught myself last year and this year how to design in Blender. It definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted but is a great resource if you want to get into 3D design with no formal training. The good thing about learning 3D is that once you get the fundamentals down, you can use your knowledge with other apps.

Render as MP4 at actual sizefor pieces with backgrounds. Render as PNG sequencefor transparent backgrounds.

Make the scale or proportions the same size as the printed canvas pieces for overlays and at the actual size for placing virtual pieces in real space. This will give that ‘popping off the page’ effect. For example, if my canvas is 16×24 printed at 300DPI, I would set the pixels of my project to 4800×7200 or 2400×3600 for smaller file size.

But what if I can’tanimate?

Hire a designer like me! $NP Designs specializes in motion design so we can make your pieces come to life and then plug them into an AR application for you. If you’re looking for a solution that doesn’t use a third-party app, we have a list of vendors to bring your idea to life without watermarks. Inquire here.
